Today we take a look at a photo showcasing the style and vibrant colors of Elm Street in downtown Dallas. This view looking east from Akard Street provides a glimpse onto Theater Row where people ask what is stadium seating in a movie theater; the Fox, Queen, Capitol, Rialto, and Palace are all visible. Out of all the buildings bathed in sunshine on the north side of Elm, only one building still remains — the art deco Tower Petroleum in the distance. The others would all be replaced by modern office towers over the next few decades. The street had not yet been converted to one-way operation; streetcar tracks and a bus are visible. At the time of this photo, “First Yanks Occupy Japan” on the marquee indicates this was probably taken in 1945. Click for larger.
